A couple of differences here from the U.S.
First, rugby, rugby is not like football, but is like U.S. football, only without loads of padding*.
*Only kidding with you guys.
Second, police escorts aren’t done with large amounts of vehicles and constables holding traffic.
All you need is a small Fiat Panda, two officers and a couple of long armed ping pong paddles, oh and maybe some alcohol or insanity, maybe even both.
Fair warning, the video is shot in portrait.

European police cars are so sad. Give me a P71 with bull bars over a panda any day.

I really don’t understand why sports teams get police escorts - and I’m surprised it happens outside the US.
It always irritated me when I would see the Chicago Bears’ (US football) opponent get an escort through stopped traffic on the Kennedy after a game downtown. It’s ~ 10 motorcoaches escorted by a dozen or more police cars. They have a friggin’ charter - it’s not leaving without them.

Was this at all necesary?

Not all of them.
My county
From around the country.
There is a vast range of police vehicles with each force choosing what they want to have from patrol cars to specialist vehicles.

Are we sure this is a police escort and not someone following a stolen police car?

Some coaches have been known to come under attack when playing away.
Also some of the players are worth vast amounts of money and having them all on one vehicle, etc...
So I can sort of see the point but ye’, in the most part, unless there is intelligence of some sort of event against the vehicle, just get on with it and stop holding everyone up.

In short, no. Lol. Even looking at the traffic there in the video, an escort wasn’t needed. Granted a lot of Rome is gridlock and they wouldn’t be going anywhere fast soon.

Well, it seems quite impractical, I know it’s a sports team but it’s not a soccer one (which is what people go mad for) so I don’t think they need the help from the police.

Yes. Italian police are,................... unique.

I think in this case it was simply a host city trying be welcoming and get the team to their hotel and rested before the game.

WTF?

Police cars in Europe, especially in Rome , are usually awesome.
(I know the Carabinieri are technically apart of the military, but they act like cops ).

Ye’, very Italian.

In Italy, sports teams are frequently used as fronts for organized crime, especially in football. Their supporters are a lot of times muscle for the gang. Do a google search for Italian ultras. They’ve nearly burned down their own stadiums on several occasions.

Yikes! I could see why they might need to be surrounded by police in that case, then.
I suppose Svend’s response to me makes some sense for, say, NFL teams, but I would hope to hell that the NFL pays for that (while knowing damn well that they get their stadiums for free so why would they pay for security...)

lol no fucks given by that cop
company cars will do that
![]() 02/25/2019 at 15:43 |

Italian driving will do that to the police.
Go dominant or go home, eventually.

Of the old Fiats I preferred the Uno to the Panda.
So Tipo, Uno, Thema and then Panda.
The 4x4 version looked cool though.

i like the uno too.. and the tipo... i thought the thema was a lancia
but in any event the panda was 400 bob with 6 months mot left on it
hard to argue with that... it passed mot with no major issues again too :)

Yes, the Thema was a Lancia, I meant Tempra, my bad.
You can’t look a gift horse like that in the eye.
